The name 'Peace' is a trade name; its formal cultivar name is Rosa 'Madame A. Meilland' introduced in France in 1942. The adoption of the trade name "Peace" was publicly announced in the United States on 29 April 1945 on the very day that Berlin fell, officially considered the end of World War II in Europe. The famous rose hybridizer, Sam McGredy, pronounced it as nearly perfect as a rose can be. Mine is 'Climbing Peace,' a sport of the original hybrid tea rose.
